I guess many people consider poor mental health as being synonymous with mental illness – they’re not – the two statuses really are not the same thing.

Effective mental health, like good physical health, is about mental ‘wellness’ – which I see as managing the day-to-day hurly burly of modern life; which includes, in no particular order; work, relationships, home, school, family, stress, happiness and so on.

And, what you’ll be noticing is that none of these things have anything to do with illness – nor are they in any way a form of human pathology – pathology meaning ‘within the personin the medical sense

I guess it’s fanciful, but to me, the solution focus – the conversations we have – become like building blocks and, when linked together, have a future focus – the light towards which we’re working – simple minded I know – but do I care?

Hi, I’m Paul Avard, and this blog is going to be about how to use the Solution Focus Approach to help your mental and psychological well-being be the best it can be – although I’m based in the UK, that’s no problem, and YOU are welcome at this site, wherever you happen to be reading this – if I can help anyone through this blog – then all well and good, huh?

Solution Focus

  • How does this work?
  • Can anyone do it?
  • Is it worth doing?
  • How can I do more of it?

How does this work? Good question – no matter how big an issue you may have, there will have been times when that issue is slightly less – and it only needs to be a little bit less – of a problem.

At the point when things are, even marginally, better – then something will have happened to make things less severe – what? Who knows? However, we can find out – simply through talking …

A skilled sf practitioner will be able to help you to focus down on whatever it was that was ‘different’ and will explore the nature of that difference with you; asking subtle, thoughtful, mindful questions to help you to explore and to develop even MORE the least little things that, in their difference, or change, help you to make a difference to your life.

The tiniest recognizable change you make will be noticed – after all, you noticed; that’s how you were able to bring it to the worker’s attention in your conversation.

Can you do more of the littlest thing that makes a difference? You can! Wow, how? What tells you that doing more of what doesn’t hurt is good and useful for you?

And strangely enough – in this world of experts, the EXPERT part sits where it ought – with YOU!! That’s right, the worker did and does nothing, advised you of nothing – just helped YOU begin tease out the start of your story of change; spoke with you and began to go on a journey with you – anything else and the work becomes solution forced – which is not good, however, sadly this is what often passes for solution FOCUS.
